Monyhull Church began life in 1989 when a group of Christians living in the south of Birmingham decided to meet together in one of their homes. They shared a conviction that the focus of church life should be the systematic teaching of the Bible.
Word spread regarding this meeting and on the first Sunday over 30 people attended. After a few weeks of meeting it became obvious that there was the potential for a new church in the south of Birmingham – and by the summer of 1989 ‘South Birmingham Evangelical Church’ was formed.
The Sunday meetings soon transferred to the (then) Women’s Hospital in Sparkhill, where regular Sunday services continued until 1995.
When the Women’s Hospital closed, Sunday morning meetings transferred to Swanshurst Girls’ School and evening services to St Francis Chapel on the site of the former Monyhull Hospital in Kings Norton. When the closure of that hospital was announced the church were able to aquire the chapel building and surrounding land. Eventually this was to become Monyhull Church, and when the new development was complete (in September 2013), the Monyhull Church Centre.
In March 2000, the morning services also transferred to Monyhull and four years later the church officially changed its name to Monyhull Church in order to identify itself with the fast-growing local residential development.
In 1995 the church had appointed its first pastor, Colin Tamplin, who remained until 2017. From 2006-2013, Colin was joined by John Tindall who had moved to Birmingham from Chessington Evangelical Church. From 2010-2013, Paul Mallard also joined the Ministry Team. He moved to Birmingham from Woodgreen Evangelical Church in Worcester and combined his Associate Pastor role with his responsibilities as Director of the Midlands Gospel Partnership.
In the Autumn of 2013 Andy Cole became the new Associate Pastor and at this coincided with the completion of the new Church Centre. The new building has enabled the church to facilitate its ministries and to better serve the local community.
In 2017, after 22 years of ministry at Monyhull, the Senior Pastor Colin Tamplin took early retirement and Andy Cole was appointed as the new Senior Pastor.
